Body Mass Index

Body mass index (BMI) is measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women. A frequent use of the BMI is to assess how much an individuals body weight departs from what is normal or desirable for a person of his or her height. BMI provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.

  • Enter your weight and height using standard measurements (pounds and feet/inches).
  • Click on calculate and your BMI will appear on the results page.
  • The results page will display your BMI and refer to results according to the following categories:

                         BMI Categories:

      • Underweight = 15 – 18.5
      • Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
      • Overweight = 25-29.9
      • Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

BMI is a reliable indicator of total body fat, which is related to the risk of disease and death. The score is valid for both men and women but it does have some limits. The limits are:

  • Accuracy can be distorted by such factors as fitness level, muscle mass, bone structure, gender, and ethnicity.
  • It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
  • It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass.
